I told a few of my clients that I would be writing a blog about vitamin R. They all responded with the same: “What is vitamin R?”
VITAMIN R (Rest) is the 7th element in the Lifestyle Program N.E.W.S.T.A.R.T. Vitamin R comes in 4 different types. Yes 4 different types of rest. The first 2 are:
Vitamin R1:
The sleep vitamin. This is daily rest or sleep. Research recommends the average adult requires 7 to 8 hours of sleep a day, and children require 10 to 12 hours. (I personally require 9 to hours to eliminate eye puffiness, not cute). In the U.S., fatigue is one of the 10 most common reasons for doctor visits.
How to Achieve Better Sleep
Find ways to handle stress better. People who manage their stress appear to require less daily sleep. In other words, if you are emotionally healthy and positive, your body is likely to sleep more efficiently. Massage enhances sleep quality (heck you might just sleep for 45 minutes on the massage table).
Exercise: Regular exercise helps to decrease our sleep requirements. In fact, exercise has been demonstrated to decrease fatigue and boost mental and physical vigor.
Negative Effects of Sleep Deficit:
- Irritability and belligerence
- Delusions and hallucinations
- Decrease blood flow to the brain
- Decreases the immune system’s ability to function
Sleep deprivation can clearly have life-threatening consequences. Probably one of the most notable is falling asleep while driving. One interesting aspect of current research on falling asleep at the wheel is that accidents and fatalities seem to be the most common in those who have not learned their limits.
Please take care of your body and get your required amount of rest. Love your body, keep it healthy, and manage stress by incorporating regular massages as part of your health care regimen.
