Getting a cold while you are pregnant may make you may feel as if you are going to suffer with an illness for months on end but there are some natural ways to help yourself feel better. Before you give in and assume you are destined to be miserable, know that there are ways to get some help fast.

The truth is that because a cold is viral in nature there’s not really much you can do about it. While you are pregnant you can’t even take most cold medications and that can make you feel worse. You want to take the best care of you and your baby and even though it may seem overwhelming it just might be easier than you think. Go back to the basics and turn to the most natural forms of self care to shake that cold fast!

Turn to the Right Foods

You are what you eat! This is even more important when you are pregnant. When you are sick the foods that you eat can help to provide you with key nutrients that will speed things along and get you healthy again. You want to get the most value out of your food to help heal you and make you feel like yourself again.

Try eating foods like citrus fruits such as oranges, pineapples and grapefruits, as well as sweet potatoes. These are all extraordinarily high in vitamin C and can help to get rid of the virus and naturally boost your immune system. You may also find that offerings of other fruits and vegetables help as they are rich in antioxidants. Particular help can come from blueberries, broccoli, and apples which are all high in nutrients.

Get Plenty of Rest and Really Take Care of Yourself

Never underestimate the power of a good night of sleep, particularly when you are sick during pregnancy! Your body can easily become run down as it is busy doing so much to build this tiny little human. So if you feel sick get plenty of “zzzzz’s” and it will help you to repair and rebuild.

Also keep in mind that stress can weaken the immune system and make it easier for you to get sick. It’s important to manage your stress effectively during pregnancy for a variety of reasons. One of them being that you can stay healthy and strong more easily if your stress is under control.

Bump Up the Fluids Exponentially

Water is your very best friend as it helps to flush out the system thoroughly. You can also get great help from clear broth in the form of chicken noodle soup as it has natural healing powers. The more fluid the better for your capacity to heal!

Turning to natural fruit juices can not only work as a great fluid but also a nice way of introducing vitamins and minerals. Hot green tea has natural antioxidants and the heat can help to soothe the body. Put in a bit of honey and fresh lemon juice and you have really increased your healing power with this great beverage!

Take Safe Supplements Whenever Possible

Talk to your doctor and see what supplements are safe. You may not be able to take favorites such as Echinacea but you may find that a little extra vitamin C can work wonders. Always ask just to be sure, but know that some supplements are perfectly safe and help you to heal and make you feel healthy again, even when it feels like you are going to be destined to a pregnancy in bed!
